The tradition continues...
With pouring rain during the week before the Sydney Cup, organisers couldn’t help but wonder if the 4th running of the SC was going to be yet another rain affected weekend. 3 years in a row, we have mustered at Malabar to only be on the road home at lunch due to poor weather. What was in stall for us this year?
Well, Saturday morning, the skies were clear, and the sun was very warm for a mid-winter day. Also warm, were some of the shooters who put down some fantastic results.
Sydney Branch members and enthusiasts turned out to a very well run event that highlighted the experience and professionalism of the Sydney Branch organisers and volunteers. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, the incredible amount of rain leading up to the event kept many of the expected participating numbers down. Many of our friends on the northern regions of NSW are doing it tough in flood, ironically, after years of drought. It wasn’t a surprise to see only 5 or 6 travellers for the event, and those were only beyond the boundaries of Sydney.
The weekend of shooting started with pistol on Saturday morning. A keen 25 shooters showed up to get their shoes wet, including a friendly lot from the ACT who are always welcome.
Matches for pistol started at 50m for the slow fire events, that always sort out the otherwise close scores, then worked down the range shooting various positions and timings to the 7m mark. Shooters were given the option to contest 1 or all of the 4 pistol classes (for Std Centrefire, Mod Centrefire and Rimfire).
Without doubt, this pistol GP round would not have been possible if it were not for the support of the SSAA affiliated Royal Australian Navy Reserve Club acting as the pistol event hosts. NAVY Captain George Papallo and SSAA Sydney Secretary Grant Bayley worked tirelessly preparing the range facility for this weekend. “Well done” from all of us.

Sunday blessed us with clear skies, the cause of freezing cold conditions. An addition to the day was the typical Malabar wind that always comes up on competition day. However, some incredible results were obtained during both the Sydney Cup and Grand Prix matches by those who managed to predict the wind strengths.
Competitors exercised all the skills required for shooting 3 positions (prone, sitting and off-hand) during slow and rapid fire courses. Some shooters relished the challenge that this discipline offers, no matter what type of rifle is your preference (Std, Modified or Match rifles with iron or optical sights), and produced great results, including many shooters achieving PB’s and breaking grade.
Unlike previous years, the clouds stayed away, and we were able to complete the day, well within time. It was a very well run event. Special thanks to Jason Watson and Roman Copot who both chose not to shoot, but preferred to simply help run the events.

Rifle Classes: - Military/Service As Issued (class A, B, C) - Iron Sights- Military/Service Origin - Modified (class H) - Iron Sights – within spirit. - Open Match Rifle (beyond class H) - Iron Sights (commercial actions) - Optical Rifle – Std or Mod (classes F1, F2, G, J/T) - Scoped/Optical Sights Phase 1 MATCH 1 – 3 POSITION CORE EVENT (30 rounds) – walk up.MATCH 2 – RAPID FIRE B (20 rounds)Phase 2 MATCH 3 – SNAP C @ 300m double snap (10 rnds - 5 exposures of 6 sec, 2 shots per exposure).MATCH 4 – 3 POSITION CORE EVENT (30 rounds) – walk up.
