By David (Ned) Kelly (aka DK)

The inaugural highpower state titles in Western Australia have been held and it was a great weekend as expected.  Numbers where well down from what was expected and catered for but when competing against other disciplines and being the new kid on the block here, it was good just to get it running.

The eleven shooters the Saturday and fourteen the Sunday saw some not so nice weather Saturday morning but with a briefing and kick off on time away we went.  All was running smoothly with scores down on normal due to a wind that just wouldn’t go away.  The range locals thought the weather was bad but David Waters, of NSW, assured us it was nothing compared to typical day at his breezy Malabar range.

With an earlier than expected finish to day 1, a teamed rundown and shoot falling plate shoot was run for fun to finish the day.  Dad’s Army opening scene should be an apt way of describing the running styles of some of the older members but down they got and the “camouflaged” white plates where hit, and then hit again, and then they where knocked over.

Day 1 was over, and it was time to break out the numerous meat BBQ packs and indulge wonderful home made trifle before a much needed nights sleep was on the cards for most, except for those that carried on around the bullshit fire!!!

Sunday saw an early start and the weather shined on us – it was a perfect day for shooting. This is what the many travellers come to expect from the glorious WA?

Scores reflected this with a lot of shooters improving on day 1 results for their first rifle spec.  It was fantastic to have the more experienced shooters giving the newer shooters some help and encouragement to get them shooting right.

The weekend ended with the presentations and promises that the visiting members from other clubs would promote and encourage the highpower format and discipline.  This will no doubt see WA have 2006 a year of travelling and running some more NMC’s around the state.  Bring it on!

Next year will see the WA State Titles return to the fantastic Coolilup range, but hopefully the shooting calendar will increase on major events to include Vintage Rifle Nationals (the inaugural running).  Details for this course available from the AIHPA website.

To close, the future of highpower in WA looks bright, just got to get a few more easterners over to beat!
