2008 AIHPA AUSTRALIAN NATIONALS - WRAP-UP

Friday morning saw good attendances show bright and early for what was to be an epic event for AIHPA since it started back in 2004.

The event opened with the Vintage Match Course where shooters fired 4 strings at 200 in 3 positions and combinations of deliberate and rapid fire.  All rifle types were contested, and all rifle specifications shot some outstanding results – a sign of good shooting progress.

2008 Nationals Vintage Match Champions:

            - Spec 1           Craig Mahoney

            - Spec 1A        Gary Sawle

            - Spec 2           Peter Barnier

            - Spec 3           David Waters

            - Spec 5           Grant Bayley

The VMC was immediately followed by the IMC – International Match Course shot over 200, 300 & 600m in 3 positions and multiple courses.  This international match is considered to core of AIHPA, and was well contested over Friday and Saturday in what started as nice weather that very quickly deteriorated to some terrible shooting conditions.  Saturday was extremely windy, gusty, and there were complete changes in wind directions and light testing every shooter and keeping scores very low even for the best of them, although there were a couple of shining results from Peter Barnier and David Waters reaching the 480+ mark.

            - Spec 3           Peter Barnier

            - Spec 5           Nick Abrahall

            - Spec 5A        Grant Bayley

Special mention to AIHPA’s newly elected Snr Vice President Mathew Avard, who collected his Distinguished Expert qualification award after the Saturday match.  Matt is only the 3rd person in Australia to reach this proficiency, and it is a credit to his determination and dedication to the sport.  Congratulations Matt.

The Australian Masters is a short match made up of key component strings from the IMC of standing 200, 300 rapid and the first 10 shots of the 600 slow fire for a 300 total.  Awards are allocated to the Masters only by rifle specification.

The last match on Saturday was the Tactical consisting of 600m, 20 shots, of deliberate and snap fire.  It is a crash and burn type match and very unforgiving for anybody no “in the groove”.  There were 3 stand-out performances with special mention to our long distance traveller, all the way from Perth WA, Matt Lewis.  Matt came 3rd by only 1 point which in this type of match, and given the freezing cold and almost dark conditions, means there was nothing in it.

2008 Nationals Tactical Campion     John Barnier

Sunday morning saw the 2nd running of the AMC Nationals.  Last year was the first running, and held in conjunction with ASRA (Australian Service Rifle Association) which was a great success.  This year, 2008, was a fantastic year to run the complete 3 distance course, and some tremendous results were shot given the very cold and very windy conditions.

By the close of the weekend, we had shot 5 matches in 3 days, had a faultless run meet, a great group of people and a lot of fun.  Many thanks to the whole Tamworth crew and all volunteers who helped out.  Special thanks to every shooter who allowed the event to be shot in the spirit it was meant for – competitive but enjoyable sporting target shooting.

48 shooters enjoyed the AIHPA Nationals, providing good revenue for the host club, and hopefully the shooters will spread the word of our great sport and club, and continue to support the remainder of the events for 2008, and beyond.

Special thanks to Willy of the Abraham Lincoln motel in Tamworth who supported the travellers by making them feel welcome at his hotel.  Special shooter rates applied, which included a free BBQ breakfast Sunday morning – all you could eat...

Extra special thanks, to Matt Lewis of Perth WA, who made the pilgrimage across the country to attend this great event.

Finally, and certainly not least, it was great to see Wal Cameron and Roman Copot at the meet, after some serious illness.  They look fantastic, and hope they will continue to support us for many years to come.

This meet also threw the cat amongst the pigeons for the GT Series of 2008.  With most shooters competing in 2 rifle specs, and with the revamp of spec 2, the GT series has been blown wide open for anybody who really wants it to step-up and collect.

The AIHPA AGM was held Friday night, where some new faces made their way onto the committee and executive.  We hope the association is in good hands going forward.

By the end of the meet, the various national champions title holders were:

Andrew Brown John Barnier Mark Guest Peter Barnier David Waters Craig Mahoney Matt Avard Gary Sawle Nick Abrahall Grant Bayley

Last, and certainly not least, many thanks to David Waters and Peter Barnier who did more than their share of work to make the vent possible.  Thanks fellas.

See you all soon...at the remaining meets for the year...for good shoots...for good fun...
