The 2008 NSW State Titles were held in perfect conditions, and good spirits. The turnout was very poor all things considered. We hope this will be addressed for 2009 and the remainder of the 2008 meets. But those that weren't there, basically missed out.
There were some sensational scores shot across the weekend, and not by just a few shooters. Many shooters reached personal best scores, either in strings or matches. Perhaps this was a sign of the well presented range, and the well administered event.
Gilgandra RC and SSAA have worked very hard to welcome the shooters to their range, and continue to put everything they earn into the facility. This is not scheduled to end soon, with the recent acquisition of an additional 7 frame carriers which will expand the range to 11 carriers, due to be on-line by the November meet.
Peter and his crew at the camping grounds again looked after us putting a roof over our heads with beds, hot showers, open range grounds and feeding the hungry troops after the day on the range (how about that dinner Sat night!).
Each day was run incredibly well, and with 8.30am starts, the days were finished well ahead of expectation - including Saturday with a 600yard IMC scheduled that concluded at 1.10pm.
VMC wrap-up. This match opened proceedings, with the 2 additional prone legs run first. This made Friday a fantastic day of shooting, without hassle, and offering shooters an opportunity to use this match to gain rock solid sighters for the remainder of the day, the main event. Adding only 1 hour to the IMC, it was a welcome addition.
IMC wrap-up. This match was a 200 start that tested all the shooters, with most shooters posting some very respectable, and even personal best scores. The move to 300 was a tester with some switching conditions that even brought some of the top shots undone. 600 was tough, with only a few handling the conditions, while many were blown and buckled testing the marksmanship skills of every shooter.
TMC wrap-up. At 600, and shot mid-afternoon, many were going to get tested. With top names crumbling and equipment parity completely irrelevant, Matt Avard screamed down a blistering 20 rounds to shoot a 198/200. This was unbelievable, and had Matt suffer many jokes later that night around the camp.
AMC wrap-up. This event is tough. The targets tough enough, but throwing into the mix fig 12 targets at 100 for standing snap, then anything can happen. Dave Waters layed down a 296/300, which equals his score in the AMC Sydney Open the week earlier, with his faithful TAR repo he uses for iron sights practice.
Special thanks to Josh Coughran who RO'd all 3 days, and did a splendid job, improving with every meet. Thanks to Bill Cheal and John Brooks for their efforts on the range, along with the whole Gilgandra crew - Ali, Lesley, Jack and Peter. Many thanks to all the volunteers over the weekend assisting with all duties, and most of all, thanks to every shooter that showed up to support the meet, who were excellent in keeping things moving, giving good target and pit service and were organised and well spirited the whole weekend.
The whole weekend was a fantastic meet. Gilgandra is certainly a favourite place for many of us to attend, and we look forward to our next visit.
