ALL MATCHES SHOT, ALL SHOOTERS WELCOME.

Tamworth/Peel Valley Rifle Club again hosted the 4 days of National Matches 12-15 May 2011.  The host club again put on a great show after some tremendous contributions from the clubs volunteers and stable mates.  The range was well presented, new targets, and the 2011 National Matches shirts look sensational.

The matches commenced Thursday with the International Match in some very comfortable but tricky conditions.  The scores were below average, which became the theme for the weekend as shooting conditions got tougher.  The second part of this match resumes on Saturday…

Friday was the annual Vintage Match.  This favourite has shooters bring out the old faithful and much loved standard issue (Spec 1) service rifles.  This match presents shooters with not only a great opportunity to compete 1-on-1 with other like rifles, but also reminds us what these rifles are like to shoot.  Nathan Fennessy (QLD) showed the way with his Swedish Mauser, Peter Barnier (NSW) with his M10, and Glenn Skipworth (QLD) with the ever faithful SMLE.  Although shooters may not have a Spec 1 rifle, they are encouraged to borrow if possible.

A favourite of many, the Tactical Match followed the Vintage, with the optical rifles out in force.  In the toughest conditions of the day, Matt Avard proved why he is he “Tactical King” and smashed a 199.12 out of a possible 200 – excellent for 600metres in forced conditions.  The top few places were very close, with an excellent group to Graham Smith with a 14X.

Friday night, all shooters were welcomed to a food feast, while attending the High Power Assn AGM.  All thanks to TPVRC and their hard working Dean Dewhurst who spearheaded the catering.

Saturday was a revisit to the International Match, for those new arrivals, or those wishing to contest the championship in a different rifle spec.  Certain strings from the Thursday and Saturday International Match scores also counted towards the National Masters, which is the Australian version of the Presidents 100.  By the close of business, the champions for both the IMC and Masters were: S1 Nathan Fennesy (QLD), S1a Barney Hryckiewizc (NSW), S2 David Waters (NSW), S3 Peter Barnier (NSW), S5 Graham Smith (NSW), S5a John Webber (NSW).

Along with Sunday came some brilliant shooting conditions for the Australian Match.  This course was cut short by 10 rounds from the 100m standing string, to get the proceedings finished around the 2.30pm mark, to leave time for scoring and presentation.  This proved a good move, as travellers were on the road by 4pm.  Champions were S1 Nathan Fennessy (QLD), S2 Peter Barnier (NSW), S5 Graham Smith (NSW).

Unfortunately the numbers were down on previous years…  Reducing numbers should be a concern to ALL of us, that shoot these matches or not.  The Queenslanders again, however, came and supported the matches, with much thanks.

It was another successful National Matches held at Tamworth, and we are again looking at changes for 2012 to make them even better – such as a move of date (good for daylight, campers, etc), a Nationals dinner, etc.  Keep eyes open for the 2012 date, and see you there…
