“NSW STATE TITLES” & ANZAC
ALL CENTREFIRE RIFLES WELCOME
HOSTED BY SSAA GILGANDRA and
GILGANDRA RIFLE CLUB
14-15-16-17 APRIL 2011
Unfortunately, this was taken Sunday after the Saturday weather turning many away.
NSW STATE MATCHES
Gilgandra again hosted the NSW Matches, and again the Gilgandra range presented it self very well for the 4 day competition. This isn’t by accident, but thanks to the hard work of the great crew at the Gilgandra clubs. Speaking of hard work, the new target carriers should be ready for the November Cooee Cup meet, so there will be 8 independent targets running. Perfect!
Thursday’s International match and Sundays Vintage match followed by the Tactical match were shot in some sensational conditions, as indicated by some of the scores. There were many personal bests, and some new local, state and national records being set.
Saturday and Sunday were completely different days. Pooring rain on Saturday saw the International match activities of the day postponed to Sunday. Unfortunately, the scheduled Sunday match had to be cancelled for the year.
The usual dormitory site for Gilgandra shooters is up for sale, so was not available for shooters this trip. We are not sure what the future holds for us ever getting back there. But many shooters chose to stay in caravan parks, motels or hotels. Some camped, with some great camp site setups in beautiful surrounds and all the fresh air anybody can handle.
Unfortunately the weekend numbers were down. The conditions had many shooters leave early, some without firing a shot. Our numbers are a concern for future years. We are not sure why. Our events are fantastic, well run, enjoyable, credible, and challenging. All licensed shooters are welcome…all the time.
L-R, Garry Sawle S1, David Waters S2, Matt Avard S3, Norm Baynes S5a, Graham Smith S5.
Matt has come a long way in shooting in the last few years. To some, he is still a new shooter. To others, Matt is a fierce rival.
Matt began shooting with the AIHPA some 5 years ago. Since then, Matt has contested most every AIHPA match and many other matches at many different clubs and ranges throughout Australia. In 2007, Matt attended the US National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. Ever since, Matt’s shooting has turned a cog, going from strength to strength.
In July 2009, Matt shot a “possible” and new National Record, in the Tactical Match Course (TMC), with a 200.13 out of 200.20 at 400 yards. With many TMC wins coming Matts way in the next year or 2, Matt was soon labelled as the Tactical Master.
At the 2011 NSW State Matches, Matt reached a new height in competitive target shooting in Australia. In the International Match Course (IMC) 80 shot match, out of a possible 800, shot over distances of 200, 300 and 600 yards, Matt shot a 790.28. A new national record.
In the core 50shot match, with a possible of 500, Matt shot 496.17. Another new national record…passing Peter Barnier’s record of 495.23 shot almost 1 year ago.
As for the strings at each distance, Matt was either on or a point behind the string records.
Who knows where Matt will be with another few years under his belt - perhaps, pound-for-pound, one of the best shooters in the world?
Matt mostly shoots a 6mm BR in a Tikka T3 base rifle with many modifications…thanks to some good gunsmithing work and many, many long hours in the workshop. Oh, and Matt’s results came using iron sights...not a scope…
